Child abuse charges pending for mom who crashed car during police chase

- A mother is hospitalized and charged with child abuse after leading police on a chase that ended in a crash in Clinton Township.

"It did look like she had a bloody lip and she wasn't moving on the ground," said Evan Santana.

Santana and his friend saw the crash on Metro Parkway near Harper Tuesday afternoon, caught the aftermath on camera and watched as police pulled 27-year-old Zaikha Wiggins of Warren out of the car. Then another officer pulled her 5-year-old daughter out.

Santana says he couldn't believe what he saw.

"We saw a gray car fly past us with seven cops," he said. "The car ran right into the generator and the pole and all the traffic lights fell over and everything ... We just witnessed that whole crash scene and everything - it was crazy."

Clinton Township police say it started down the street with a call about a suspicious vehicle. Officers say the Malibu was in a parking lot , fogged up with cardboard on some of the windows. They say the driver wouldn't respond to police who say she then backed up into their patrol car and took off.

Officers didn't even know a child was in the car. Fortunately, she was properly restrained and wasn't hurt. The child was turned over to a relative and the mother was hospitalized at McLaren where she was arraigned on Wednesday.

Police say Wiggins was charged with fleeing and alluding, resisting and obstructing, as well as child abuse. It's not clear if drugs or alcohol played a role.

"If you put your own child in danger, I mean that's messed up - why would you do that to your own flesh and blood?" Santana said.
