Classics cruise on Woodward but the real show is in Beaumont

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) - The classics are rolling onto Woodward Avenue. Love it or hate it, the Woodward Dream Cruise is a summer staple the draws huge crowds. But for those who can't make it to the world's largest rolling car show, car buffs are bringing the excitement to them.

Specifically, the kids on the fifth floor of Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Beaumont employees are brining the thrill inside to help the kids fighting diseases.

Each year during the Woodward Dream Cruise, the staff at the hospital combine imagination and engineering and toss in a little competitive spirit in the name of giving these kids something to enjoy.

"I think it was great. A nice experience," Shakayla Davis, a patient at Beaumont Royal Oak said.

One of those unique rides is the Lego car. The driver is one-year-old Dominic Livingston who has spent quite some time couped up inside. On Friday, he got to get away without leaving the hospital.

Sabrina Elam told FOX 2 that it was such a great moment for the kids.

"It was really pretty, awesome, kids were having fun it's just a joyous moment," Elam said. "Kids in the hospital, can't see the cars outside. This is just a great present for them."

The afternoon of distraction may seem like a small gesture, but it can really do wonders for recovery. A Beaumont spokesman said the healing process takes more than medical intervention - sometimes it's about how they feel mentally as well as physically.
