Clawson police say drive-by shooting of teen was drug-related

- Clawson police say they think the drive-by shooting that rattled a neighborhood Thursday morning was drug-related.

Neighbors were stunned Thursday around 1:30 a.m. when they heard gunshots in the 1000 block of Coolidge Avenue, near 14 Mile and Rochester roads.

"[It] sounded like someone was tapping on the window of our bedroom, so I got up looked around," one neighbor said.

Teen shot twice in drive-by in Clawson neighborhood: police

She didn't want to be identified and says she didn't see anything until a few minutes later when police converged on the neighborhood. She eventually found out that a 17-year-old had been shot, just a few feet from their windows.

"Kind of how we had that siding it was like it was hitting outside our window," Dominick Yamarino, who lives next door, said. "It was kind of terrifying. I had no clue what it was."

According to police, the teen lives in on the street and was walking down the street when police say someone drove by and fired three shots, hitting the 17-year-old in the forearm and the thigh. He's expected to recover.

"What's a 17 year old doing up at 1:30 in the morning kids should all be home," the unidentified neighbor said.

Clawson police say the suspects fired the shots from a black SUV that took off west on Coolidge. Investigators revealed late Thursday they don't believe this was a random shooting and believe the motive was drug-related.

Neighbors say the victim at one point was attending an alternative high school after getting in trouble in the past. This isn't the first time police have been at his home - but neighbors say they never expected this.

"Pretty quiet street from what I have seen so far this year. That's what kind of shocking us down the street: Clawson is usually a nice, quiet area for that to happen is weird like that," Yamarino said.
