A helicopter rescue took place Friday night for five ice fishermen from Lake Erie in Monroe County.

The Coast Guard located them and used a hoist to take the two groups to safety. All five were rescued shortly after 10 p.m.

The ice fishermen were near Detroit Beach, fishing from Brest Bay just north of DTE in Monroe when they experienced trouble.

The victims were transported to a nearby hospital by the US Coast Guard helicopter from Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Witnesses on the shore called 911 after hearing them yelling and waving flashlights from the ice.
