Coleman A. Young Municipal Center on lockdown after gun passes through security

DETROIT (WJBK) - The Coleman A. Young Municipal Center is on lockdown for a police situation. Detroit police tell FOX 2 officials believe a person is inside with a weapon.

Authorities say they are looking for a white man in his early to mid 50s, who is wearing a dark-colored suit.

No injuries have been reported. Wayne County sheriff's deputies and Detroit Police are on scene. 

According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, a suspect got through security with what's believed to be a handgun in a bag. Craig said the gun was in a bag that went through security screening but the weapon was not noticed until after the man had cleared security.

Craig said the image wasn't available in the scan until after the man got into the building.

Craig said that the Detroit Police Department was notified 45 minutes after the weapon was spotted.

"Clearly we have a communication issue," Craig said. "If he became aware that security was alert to a weapon in the bag, he could have gotten out." 

Craig stressed this is not an active shooter situation and they're trying to find the man and the weapon. He also said there is not a known threat at this time.

As of noon on Monday, Craig said all council members and all the judges have been safely evacuated. 

The Coleman A. Young Municipal Center is a government office building and courthouse downtown. It is off Woodward Avenue near the Spirit of Detroit statue.

Michigan State Police are also on scene redirecting traffic. 

The building was initially being evacuated at first, and was then placed on lockdown.
