On Friday, Gov. Rick Snyder scheduled a special election to fill the congressional seat left open by Conyers' resignation amid sexual harassment allegations.

The elections will be held alongside regular primary and general elections in August and November. Snyder says this way, potential candidates will have time to decide whether or not to throw their hat in the race, and taxpayers won't have to fund a special election earlier.

Aside from Young, state Sen. Ian Conyers, a grandson of John Conyers' brother, is expected to run.
