A driver and a construction worker were killed in a crash on I-94.

A second worker was critically injured in the accident, which happened on the east bound side in a lane that was closed for construction.

State police say the driver, Marvin Harris of Detroit died at the scene last night at W. Grand Boulevard, striking Rafael Castillo-Saavedra and another worker along with a construction vehicle.

Saavedra died on impact, according to police.

"We're hoping it's still a nightmare," said Theresa Hernandez, his stepdaughter. "He was a great man, he never make you do without. All he liked to do was work."

Michigan State Police say Castillo-Saavedra was killed when Harris hit him in the construction zone at about 10 p.m. Sunday.

MDOT officials say the construction workers were doing crack sealing work on the freeway at the time of the accident.

"The investigation is still ongoing," said Lt. Calvin Hart of Michigan State Police.

MSP wants anyone who saw anything regarding the incident to contact it (248) 854-5740.

The family of Castillo-Saavedra is left asking why.

"What was going through your head," Hernandez said. "You took a good man; he still had a lot of life left in him."
