Cousin charged after teen shot to death by gun hidden beneath mattress

A young man is facing charges after his 14-year-old cousin was shot in the chest and killed in the middle of the night. 

Authorities have charged Damari Mahone of Pontiac with involuntary manslaughter after they say his handgun misfired and shot his cousin ni the chest. 

Investigators say Mahone, 20, asked his cousin to move the gun from the bed, where it was being hidden beneath the mattress, when it accidentally misfired. 

The sheriff's office says Mahone who was responsible for the gun, took his cousin Yaharre Stennis to a hospital in Pontiac about 2:40 a.m. Monday. The gunfire happened in a home in the 100 block of Willard Street. 

Stennis was eventually pronounced dead, and police took Mahone into custody at the hospital.

Authorities say during the course of the investigation, a .22 long rifle was also recovered along with 9.9 grams of heroin and a small amount of marijuana.

In addition to the involuntary manslaughter charge, Mahone is also facing a drug charge and a weapons charge. 

Mahone was denied bond and is dur in court again later this month.
