Dearborn Heights terror suspect back in federal court on gun charge

An alleged  home grown terrorist suspected of plotting to shoot up a Detroit church and pleading his support of ISIS was in federal court Tuesday.

Khalil Abu-Rayyan of Dearborn Heights has not been charged with any kind of terrorism charges, but rather facing gun charges and there's a drug charge.

What we learned today is that they never found any evidence to injure anyone at a church and there was no Ak-47 rifle found that he would have used in the attack according to an affidavit. His father had no knowledge of the plot.

The prosecution and the U.S. Attorney's office asked for a competency hearing saying they're very concerned about their mental health. In conversations with their undercover federal agent, it became apparent that Rayyan was saying that he needed help; that he was hearing voices; that he was talking to Satan; that he wanted to hurt people. According to the affidavit, he "wanted to stab them, shoot them, choke them, skin them like sheep and set them on fire."

The judge ordered him to be detained Tuesday with concerns about the voices in his head from Satan.  The defense attorney said that the young man was really just trying to impress this undercover agent who he believed was a woman by the name of Paradise Brye, Jenna Bride, and that she was an ISIS supporter.

They believe he was trying to impress her with his tough talk and his alleged plot to shoot up the church. The judge said he may very well have been boasting but he can't take that chance. There's clearly a predisposition with this young man that would make him susceptible to ISIS propaganda. Even before the undercover agent got involved, he was tweeting out videos and talking about beheadings. The judge believes the young man has some psychological issues

There is another hearing scheduled for Thursday and for now, he remains in custody but no competency hearing yet. for now,
he is being held on those charges.

The defense believes Rayyan's issues are more with depression while the judge wants to make sure he can't act on the voices he is hearing.
