Detroit Blight Busters teams up with Google to repair burned out building near church

- Volunteers with Detroit Blight Busters were joined by Google employees in taking care of a burned out building that became a magnet for crime near a Detroit church.

"Our goal is simple, we want to save Detroit," said John George with Detroit Blight Busters Inc.

George says a neighborhood church contacted Detroit Blight Busters about its neighbor - a building destroyed by fire that had turned into a hot spot for criminal activity.

Blight Busters took action and called a powerful ally for help - Google.

"Blight Busters does whatever we can to stabilize and revitalize the neighborhoods to make them beautiful and safe. This is actually a city owned property and we're working with the mayor's office to ultimately have it demolished, but right now we're going to contain the nuisance," George said.

That means cleaning, painting and boarding up windows

Google executives in Michigan for training decided to give some of their time to the community.

"We have big operations in Michigan. We have a big office in Ann Arbor, an office in Birmingham, so when we look at what we do in the community Detroit is obviously a big part of that," said Mark Miller with Google.
