Detroit man accused of killing niece on west side

A family dealing with powerful emotions after they say their loved one, Katherine Grimes was killed by a family member inside a house on Winthrop Friday morning.

“This was her uncle.”

Ora Grimes rushed over to her mother-in law's house.

This grieving mother says she still can't believe the news is true, and she can't believe an uncle could kill his niece.

“Somebody said he said he was stressed out. What is he stressed out about? He sleeps all day long.”

The victim's mother says her daughter was serving as a caregiver for her elderly grandmother who has dementia, when the senseless shooting took place.

“I need know what the (expletive) he did to my daughter.”

Grimes' fiancé Keith says they were set to marry on Sweetest Day of this year. Now he has to figure out how he will tell their children that their mother is no longer alive.

“What can I tell my son and daughter – that their mother just got killed? By her own uncle? How can you explain that?”

“She’s got two kids. “What do I tell them?” said Grimes.

Police say they are still investigating but they believe this was a family disagreement that ended in a fatal shooting and they have a 57-year old in custody.

The victim's mother says there's no reason why her daughter is dead and she wants the family member who did this to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“This (expletive) better get full extent of the law. I'm pressing charges period.”

As more and more family members arrive at to the scene to offer condolences, the mom says she still can't believe her child is gone.

“She is 42 years old too young to leave here before me. Oh my God.”
