(WJBK) - A mom to a 3-year-old has been sentenced to spend the next two decades behind bars after pleading guilty to murdering her own daughter.
Cassandra Michalski, 24, was sentenced Thursday to 20 to 40 years for the murder of her daughter, Skylar. The answer of why she did it is something that Skylar's father, Steven, wants to know.
"As Skylar's father, I want to know how could a mother who claims you love your daughter, would never hurt her, cause your own daughter's death."
Michalski pleaded guilty to felony murder and first degree child abuse. During Thursday's sentencing, she showed no emotion in court.
"The day I had to come down here to Wayne County to identify Skylar's body was the hardest thing I ever had to do," Steven said.
Prosecutors said Skylar had injuries to her head, neck and back and the cause of death was listed as abusive head trauma.
Michalski, who showed no emotion, did not speak in court.
After hearing victim impact statements, Judge Wanda Evans sentenced her 20 to 40 years for murder and 5 to 10 years for child abuse.
"No one knows your pain. We can only imagine what you've gone through," Evans said to Steven.
She does have the right to appeal the sentencing.
