A Detroit police motorcycle officer was involved in a crash on I-96 on the city's west side Friday.

The officer suffered a leg injury in the accident, caused when he went over a rumble strip on the freeway. He lost control and fell from his bike, causing his injury.

The incident happened in the local lanes near Evergreen on eastbound I-96 this afternoon. The officer was transported to Sinai Grace Hospital where he is in surgery, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said.

"Speed was not a factor and they were not doing any maneuvers," Craig said. "He was conscious, optimistic and in good spirits."

The officer is a 22-year veteran of the department and is based out of the Third Precinct. He was one of 13 officers who completed their annual week-long motorcycle certification training.

Craig added that all safety protocols were in place and with the training over, the officers were headed back when the crash happened.

Traffic is being diverted off the highway and drivers should avoid the area.
