DETROIT (WJBK) - A barricaded gunman situation that lasted several hours Monday on Detroit's southwest side has ended peacefully.
Police were called to the 1800 block of Ethel Street just before 9 a.m. When police got there, they met a 55-year-old woman and her granddaughter. The woman told police she had just gotten into a fight with her boyfriend, who lived at the house, and that he pulled out a gun and fired a shot.
She and her 8-year-old granddaughter were able to get out of the house safely and call police. The woman told police they got in an argument because her boyfriend had been on a narcotics binge for the past several days.
Police were able to go inside the house and talked to the man through a closed bedroom door. He stated he didn't want to come out and that if police wanted him, they'd have to come through the door.
Police backed off and called in assistance. After several hours of negotiations, the suspect was still inside. Police eventually used a tear-out gas and the man came outside and surrendered.
He was taken into custody without further incident. Police say several guns have been confiscated.
Nobody was injured.
