Detroit police pursuit ends in crash, suspect's death

DETROIT (WJBK) - Authorities are investigating after a Detroit police pursuit ended with a deadly crash early Wednesday morning.

We're told police were called around 2:50 a.m. about someone being threatened with a gun. When they responded to the scene, they spotted a white Grand Prix that the 911 caller described to them.

They attempted to pull over the driver, but the driver did not stop. We're told speeds reached up to 90 mph at one point during the police pursuit.

At French Road and Shoemaker Street, we're told the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. The driver was ejected and was killed. No one else was inside the vehicle.

"The officers are shaken, obviously, seeing someone lose a life. We're still looking for the weapon and trying to find the owner of the car," Detroit Police Department Asst. Chief Steve Dolunt tells us.

We're told two tow trucks were needed to carry away all the debris.

"When officers responded they went to what they thought was the car; it was the back of the car. They drove right past the front of the car," says Dolunt.

Police say car seats were inside the car, so they believe the initial 911 call may have stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Police have not yet named driver who died.
