Detroit police surprise boy who had bicycles stolen

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police go beyond the call of duty, buying a kid two brand new bikes after his were stolen.

The theft was caught on surveillance video and FOX 2 showed it to you Monday on our newscast.

The thieves are still on the loose, but tonight 8-year-old Ricky is a happy camper once again.

Officers from DPD's fourth precinct partnered with nearby businesses to buy a bike.

A detective handling the case bought the second bike all on his own.

"We thought it'd be a great idea," said Capt. Russell Solano of the Detroit police. "(We) came over and presented them to him at school and needless to say, he was really, really happy, surprised -- speechless, basically. The parents are here with him and they were more than thrilled."

Ricky was well known around his Detroit neighborhood for riding his bike up and down the streets.

"First thing he does, gets up shoots out the door and gets his bike," says Ricky's father, Ricardo Mungia.

His bike was stolen in the middle of the night from the side of their house in the 3400 block of Cicotte Street, which is near Livernois Avenue and John Kronk Street.

"I happened to wake up at 4 and came out to look and the bikes were gone," says Mungia. Two bikes were stolen; Ricky kept an extra for his friends who don't have a bike at home.

"They just walked up to the porch. I had them on the side. So, the cameras can watch them. And sure enough, they went in and got them," Mungia said.

But thanks to some DPD officers, Ricky is a happy kid with not just one, but two new bikes.

"I just want to thank the Detroit police officers for helping out and helping him get his new bikes back," Mungia said.
