Detroit street floods for week from water main break

Water has been gushing from a broken water main in a Detroit neighborhood for a week. With no solutions from the city, neighbors called the FOX 2 Problem Solvers and we got the answers they need.

Harlem Williams compared the gushing water to the ocean but - considering this is Detroit - the Riverwalk is probably a better comparison.

"It sounds like the ocean out here. The kids say they're going to the Riverwalk every day when they come outside," Williams said.

The water that's gushing on Moenart on the city's east side has been flowing for at least a week, but Melonise Johnson said the problem started long before that.

"It started leaking maybe a month ago - it was a slow leak. Then this past week, it's been just like this," Johnson said.

Neighbors are not only worried where the water is going but if it will flood their homes. They say the water pressure inside their homes is also low and as for the city - they took some action.

"They came out the other day, around 1 o'clock in the morning, and put this barrier out there but that was it. That's when it was a little leak," Johnson said.

The city's water department said the repair has been assessed and it's a high priority. But it hasn't been fixed yet because a specific part is needed. The city says they expect to have it within 24 hours.

The city also said that neighbors should not be expected to pay for the water gushing in the street.

"That's what I'm talking about," Ethel said. "My bill was over $200 and then with this added on, that's ridiculous."
