Detroit to host 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championships
DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit has been announced as the host city for the 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
All junior free skate/dance and championship level events will be held at the new Little Caesars Arena.
The U.S. Championships, which serve as the final qualifying event to make the U.S. World Figure Skating Team every year and the U.S. Olympic Team every four years, annually attract more than 1,700 athletes, coaches, officials and media to the host community and is estimated to generate more than $18 million in local economic impact.
The championships will take place January 19-27, 2019. Tickets will go on sale in early 2018.
The last time the championships were held in Detroit was in 1994 at Joe Louis Arena, and included the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding controversy. Kerrigan was attacked in the leg by people linked to Harding, her biggest competitor. Harding won the event while Kerrigan's injury forced her withdrawal.
