Detroit Village Square apartments plagued by break-in attempts

Despite the appearance, the fenced-in Village Square apartment complex at the corner of Santa Maria and Meyer feels anything but secure to a single dad who moved here eight months ago.

"When my daughter and I first moved here they said stay to yourself, they sell drugs in the alley and you can see right there," Leon Goodman said.

In fact, Detroit police were there in the early morning hours of Wednesday looking for three men attempting to break-in to several apartments.

Police say it was at about 1:30 a.m. when someone tried to break into the apartments by cutting the screens on the lower level windows. One woman inside heard what was going on, screamed and the suspects ran off.

In the daylight FOX 2 saw an occupied home with a screen clearly damaged. During the overnight hours police canvassed the area bringing in canines to try and track the scent but no arrests so far.

Police say at least one man is described as 5 feet 7 inches, bald, wearing a black jogging suit with a red stripe on the right arm.  Police continue to search for him and other suspects.

Goodman says there is room for improvement when it comes to the safety of the tenants.

"They can put cameras out here, they can put locks and hire security," he said. "We do not feel secure."
