Detroit woman: Squatters set fire to stay warm in abandoned home, spread next door

- A Detroit woman was forced to watch her home burn after an abandoned home next door caught fire and spread to hers. She says squatters are to blame for both fires.

Adrian Clemons and her family got out of their burning home on the Fisher Freeway Service Drive Thursday morning only to see the people who she said had been squatting in the abandoned home next door also outside. The fire that she was started in the abandoned home spread next door and claimed her home.

"I was woken up by my cousin. All I heard was 'Adrian, get downstairs now'," Adrian said. "When I came outside there were ladies out were out here arguing, there was like four or five ladies. I asked what happened and they said the lit the fire to stay warm. They said they tired to put the fire out with their hands but couldn't."

She says the women who were outside were gone before firefighters arrived.

Adrian said the abandoned hom was used for prostitution and would see people going and in out of the home all day. She says they were Johns meeting women for sex.

On the other side of Adrian's house was another abandoned home where a man was passed out over a grocery cart while standing up.

Adrian says she's been calling the city for years and trying to get both abandoned homes demolished.

FOX 2 sent pictures to city spokesperson who says the city is now looking at the possibility of an emergency demoltion.
