Detroiters re-elect Duggan by a more than 2-to-1 margin

It was a long, tough campaign but in the end, Detroiters chose Mike Duggan over state Sen. Coleman Young II by more than a two-to-one margin.

The results are in - Mayor Duggan gets another four years. There's now one new member of the Detroit city Council, Roy McCalister, but no other changes in personnel in Detroit.

One of the closer races in Detroit was that for city clerk. Incumbent Janice Winfrey edged out Garlin Gilchrist II by about 1,400 votes out of nearly 100,000 cast. Now he's saying foul play.

"After reviewing the unofficial returns, and hearing troubling accounts from voters about their experiences, there are questions about yesterday's election that give us concern about the vote tallies," he said.

Just under 22 percent of eligible voters in Detroit turned out. That's not good but two years ago, the voter turnout was only 17 percent and four years ago the voter turnout was 21 percent.

"We are doing our due diligence and we expect to make a decision in the next few days we will make a decision whether to file for a recount," Gilchrist said.

Voter turnout in Dearborn was 22 percent, 24 percent in Hamtramck, and one aspect that will be discussed is absentee voting.

"We certainly heard concerning reports from voters, especially absentee voters, about the confusion in the process in how the ballots were handled," Gilchrist said.

No word from the clerks office at this time, but, for the most part, Detroit will not see a significant change in their city government.
