DPD breaks up suspected drug deal, chase suspects

Police caught up to two men who tried to outrun them after officers broke up a drug deal.

The chase ended with the suspects' car on fire a utility pole brought down, and both suspects in handcuffs.

Police say it all started Thursday, just after 1 a.m. when Detroit police on patrol see what appears to be a drug transaction at Greeley and East Seven Mile in Detroit.

"The suspects get into vehicle and start to drive away. Officers get in behind them and attempt traffic stop." Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said.

Police say as the distance increased between the suspect vehicle and police car the chase was called off.  But a few minutes later it was back on again.

"A second DPD unit picks up suspects and the chase was back on again."

The chase continued into Warren and wasn't stopped until police threw stop sticks down. The suspects' car came to a stop and caught fire.

"The engine can only take so much," Woody said. "The vehicle came to a stop, the suspects taken into custody however, the vehicle did go up in flames."

The Ferndale Fire Department was called to the scene to put out the fire. No one was injured and police say they are working with prosecutors to determine charges for the suspects, two men in their 20s from Detroit.

The homeowner, whose property is now charred from the incident, says he's glad there wasn't more damage.
