Drunk driver injures MSP Trooper in crash on Detroit freeway

A Michigan State Police Trooper was injured early Sunday morning when a driver, who was believed to be drunk, crashed into his patrol car.

MSP Tpr. Matt Unterbrink (K9-25) and his K9 were assisting another patrol unit checking on an abandoned vehicle near eastbound I-96, near I-94.

Tpr. Unterbrink was using his patrol car to block traffic at approximately 12:40 a.m. when another vehicle crashed into his car while he was still in it. 

The trooper was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released. Another K9 Trooper took Tpr. Unterbrink's K9 partner Boz home.

The female driver of the vehicle that struck the patrol car was arrested for drunk driving and was lodged at the Detroit Detention Center. She is awaiting arraignment.

There were children in the suspect's vehicle at the time of the crash. They were released to family members.

There were no other injuries.
