Family injured when firework flies into their car in Detroit

Fireworks are beautiful to watch but also dangerous.

A family was injured when a firework flew into a family's car at Manistique near Kercheval. The remnants can still be seen in the back of their car with a piece of a firework still inside.

FOX 2: "Were you afraid at all?"

"Yes," said 8-year=-old Carlos Smith said. "Will I live or will I die."

That’s what little Carlos was thinking when his family says a firework came into the car leaving him with a gash on his side, a burn on his hand, leg and stomach.

His mom Rayn, couldn’t hear.

“I jumped out the car and at first I panicked," she said. "Then I opened up the doors and smoke was coming everywhere and they were trying to tell us to put ice on it. They both were bleeding so bad and they were trying to say call 911."

Elliott Vance was in the driver’s seat and he says the firework hit him first.

“It hit me right in the face," he said. "Then it went on the back seat and blew in the back seat with him in it.”

Him - being little Carlos, sitting in the back while his parents say a fire raged around him.

“Stuff can happen really quick," Elliot said. "I never thought I’d be hit with a firework and I never thought I'd see this young man burned up.”

“A piece of the firework inside his skin."

Now an 8-year-old is feeling pain 

“When my arm or my side get hit, poked or touched.”

And his mom is feeling he shouldn’t have to.

"If you are not a professional to do these fireworks, you shouldn't do it period," she said.

When Rayne realized what happened she says she rushed her family to the closest hospital. She said she also suffered a cracked rib.
