Family of cats found in taped-shut garbage can outside Monroe Humane Society

- A family of kittens abandoned in Monroe was found outside the Monroe Humane Society in a trash can that had the lid taped on.

The can was dropped off after hours. By the time employees came to work Thursday morning, the animals were covered in their own urine and feces.

The two adult cats and their five kittens had no room to move.

Workers were surprised they were still alive, but say the cats were at least fortunate to have gotten dropped off at a place where they'll get love and care.

The humane society, though, encourages people to drop off animals during business hours.

"We wish people wouldn't leave the animals outside. They're subject to weather conditions. Like last night, we had basically torrential down pours so I was worried that they might have even drowned," says Wendy Graber from the humane society.

Right now, the cats are being vaccinated and will need some time before they'll be available for adoption.
