Family remembers man fatally shot outside his mother's home

Police are investigating after one man was killed in a double shooting on the city's east side Saturday evening. Family and friends gathered at the scene Sunday night to remember their loved one.

Melvin Jennings, 26, was one of the men who was shot outside his mother's home. He later died at the hospital. Right now, we don't know much about the other man who was injured in the shooting.

The shooting happened Saturday around 6 p.m. in the 5800 block of Woodhall Street, which is near Chandler Park Drive and Cadieux Road.

Right now, Detroit Police don't have a motive, and have not been able to release more information on anyone they may be looking for. Meanwhile, another family has been hurt by senseless gun violence.

An aunt of Jennings was thought to have suffered a heart attack shortly after she learned of her nephew's death. She was taken to the hospital, where she learned she was having an anxiety attack. Physically she is doing okay.

Loved ones gathered Sunday night to remember Jennings.

"All these people out here this time of night, they love my son. I want everybody to know to get them boys off the street; they come and do some bold stuff like that. Melvin knew them. He knew them; he grew up with them," says Melvin Johnson, Jennings's father.

Police haven't yet confirmed that connection or given any information about possible suspects.

If you were in the area at the time of the shooting and saw or heard anything, you're asked to contact the Detroit Police Department. Sources tell us the suspects may have been driving a yellow corvette in the area.
