Fatal car accident shuts down portion of SB I-75

The southbound lanes of Interstate-75 were closed at Nine Mile for several hours Thursday morning after a fatal accident. The accident happened just north of Eight Mile Road in Hazel Park around 3:30 a.m.

Police say the accident happened because a Toyota stopped in the center lane of the freeway for an unknown reason. Their vehicle was hit by an oncoming SUV.

Police say the man in the driver's seat of the Toyota was killed during the impact. The passenger was taken to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the SUV was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital with minor injuries.

Police have not released names at this time as they are still notifying family members.

The section of the interstate reopened shortly after 8 a.m. At one point, traffic was backed up to I-696.
