Father killed in front of 1-year-old after road rage dispute

A father is killed when a case of road rage turns violent that happened Saturday night after a minor accident on I-96.

According to police, the victim, 26-year-old Demario Thompkins, exchanged words with the other driver after the minor accident near Greenfield. That's when police say the other driver pulled a gun and shot the man in the head. 

Police say Thompkins' girlfriend and his one-year-old son were in the car when he was shot and killed but were unharmed. His girlfriend spoke with FOX 2's Dave Spencer. She said they had just left a birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese.

"I was holding his head with my shirt to try and stop the blood," she said. "I tried to save him the best way I could."

It started with a minor side swipe on I-96 around 10:30 Saturday night. Thompkins was int he passenger seat and exchanged words with someone in another. That person pulled a gun and shot Thompkins in the head, killing him.

"I have to go on without having him in my life anymore. He means everything to me," Thompkins' girlfriend said.

Police say several shots were fired into the car but the child and the child's mom were not hit.

According to police, the other car was a silver, gray, or white Chevrolet Malibu and they believe the car has some damage due to the accident. They say there were at least three other people in that car at the time of the shooting.
