SOUTHGATE, Mich. (WJBK) - Authorities have charged a man after a fatal workplace shooting at a paper packaging company in Southgate.
Authorities say Devon Hampton got into a fight with a coworker the night of Friday, September 2 and pulled out a gun and fatally shot the coworker in the chest. They worked at AJM Packaging on Reeck Road, which is near Northline Road and Interstate 75.
The victim's name has not been given.
Hampton has been charged with First-Degree Murder; Carrying a Concealed Weapon; Felonious Assault; and Felony Firearm.
Police are still figuring out what led up to the shooting. Police investigating the case say Hampton also pointed the gun at another coworker and then tried to get away, but was apprehended by police.
"The suspected murder weapon, a 380 caliber pistol, which was registered to Devon Hampton, was located near the scene of the crime," Southgate Police Det. Sgt. Ronald Pongracz says.
Hampton, whose body shook so badly throughout his entire arraignment that his handcuffs were rattling, maintains his innocence.
"I'm the victim in this. I'm not a threat to society; even the officer behind me said I never, ever committed a crime in my life," Hampton said during his arraignment. You can watch that video in the video report above from FOX 2's Ingrid Kelley.
Hampton told the court that he was homeless and stays at a motel and works part time as temporary worker at AJM.
"I was working that job trying to be independent," he said.
But for now, Hampton will spend his days behind bars.
