Final piece of M-1 Rail finished in Detroit

It's an M-1 major milestone - construction crews welded the final piece of the rail.

Construction of the M-1 rail QLine track is complete.

"So this is the equivalent of topping off a building, only we're laying down instead of standing up," said Paul Childs, M-1 chief operating officer.

The project took more than two years to complete. This has been about a 10 man crew completing all this work.

"This has been about a 10-man crew," Childs said. "We actually hired a couple metro Detroiters, so they have learned how to do this process. They have some new skills and they know how to do this work."

The 6.6 mile track on Woodward will go through testing and drivers will go through training with an official opening set for April.

The Q-line street cars will stop at 12 locations throughout metro Detroit.  Three street cars, about 66 feet long will carry an average of 125 passengers each traveling right alongside traffic on Woodward Avenue in the heart of the city.
