Firefighters battle large blaze in SW Detroit

WEB UPDATE (9:14): The fire is now under control at the junkyard in southwest Detroit.

The blaze was at a junkyard in the 9100 block of Fort Street causing police to direct traffic. Several cars were on fire inside the yard. Fort Street, just west of I-75 in the area, was closed at the time of the fire.

Assistant Fire Chief Dave Fornell said that it started as a rubbish fire, but when units arrived at the scene there were a "number of cars" burning inside.

Fornell added that the wind is making the fire difficult to contain and that the fire spread because of it.

A surround and drown maneuver was used by firefighters to make sure no one is injured.
