Firefighters surprise 19-year-old paralyzed from shooting with gifts

A teenage girl seriously injured during a shooting in 2009, received a heart-warming gift from some local heroes.

Unwrapping presents like any excited teen during Christmas time, Dreia Davis of Detroit gets a surprise visit Wednesday.

"Hey dad look at my boots," said Davis.

The man in red this holiday was disguised as Detroit firefighters.

"No family should have to go through this," said Sgt. Jim Nadolski of DFD. "As you can see, this girl is a ray of sunshine."

Firefighters from across the city gathered together to donate gifts and hugs to Dreia and her family.

Dreia seen on FOX 2 earlier this year after a drive-by shooting in 2009 changed her life forever. Since then, her father, Curtis White has been taking care of her, carrying her.

Expected not to survive in 2009, Dreia was just 13 at the time. She was on life support for months and was left paralyzed on one side of her body, confined to a wheelchair.

"When something happens you still have to be there for them," White said. "That's all you can do."

But this day White, just as surprised as Dreia.

"She got what she wanted," White said. "And I get what I wanted - her smile back."

Now the 19-year-old and her father -- continue to fight...

FOX 2: "How are you feeling?"

"I feel fabulous," Dreia said.

Despite her circumstances she continues to be a sparkling spirit.

"Sometimes we just take things for granted," said firefighter Antonio Bey. "I was just happy to help."

These simple gifts evoked a smile and memories these firefighters and their families, say they will cherish forever.

"Anybody can open up a wallet," Nadolski said. "But when you open up your heart it means even more."

"Hopefully we can do the same and continue on for next year and for years to come," Bey said.

White also got a few gifts and he and Dreia will be going to see the Detroit Lions game Sunday.
