Five arrested in brawl at back to school event

Five people are arrested after a brawl outside an elementary school in Detroit.

Dariona, 11, was at a back to school rally at Burns elementary and middle school on Detroit's west side. The event included fun, games, free school supplies and fights.

"You are supposed to be role models for us," said Dariona Mike-Fossett. "And you want us to act well but you're acting the fool."

A brawl breaks out leading to Detroit police arriving at the scene. It led to five people detained including two teenage girls and three men ages 17, 23 and 24.

"They need to stop acting like fools and animals because we're growing up," said Jimia Lyles-Mike, a high school student. "We follow behind our parents and elders."

The students were disappointed the rally had to be shut down, the bouncy houses deflated just like their hopes for the day. Children were disgusted watching some of the so-called grown-ups setting such a bad example.

"So many people fight for no reason and then it influences kids in school," said Dariona. "And then they start fighting and the next thing you know, we're all going to be in jail because we see other people doing it."

The men will be charged with disorderly conduct the teenage girls were released to their parents. As for the students, the adults could learn a thing or two from them.

"They keep on telling us we're the next generation," Dariona said. "But we watch (them) and they aren't doing anything with themselves."
