This will no doubt be a difficult day for friends, family and colleagues. This is the second funeral for area law enforcement this week. On Monday, a Detroit police officer who also died following a hit-and-run crash was laid to rest

Sgt. Lee Smith, 55, was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver while jogging on Hines Drive in Westland last week. That driver is now facing several charges in connection to Smith's death. The driver was eventually caught and arrested, and is also accused of cleaning evidence off his car.

Smith first joined the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in July of 1992. Most recently, he headed the Mounted Unit.

He's described as being dedicated and passionate about his job. He was set to retire in just a couple of months. His last day would have been October 1.

"I don't think we can replace Sergeant Lee Smith, ever," said Lt. Theodis Sims. "He left his mark, his legacy on this department."
