U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell and House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer met with Cindy Garcia and her family Sunday evening at their home in Lincoln Park to highlight the urgent need to address the country's broken immigration system.

Ms. Garcia is a UAW worker and the wife of Jorge Garcia, a father of two who was deported to Mexico in January after living in the United States for 30 years and never receiving so much as a traffic ticket.

"He was our caretaker, he was always with us," Garcia says.

As immigration negotiations continue in Congress, Dingell and Hoyer are working to advance a bipartisan compromise that does not tear families apart and provides a path to citizenship for those individuals who know no other home than the United States.

We need people to realize we need a pathway to citizenship," Garcia said.

Last year, Dingell petitioned Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to obtain an extension for Mr. Garcia, which allowed him to stay in the country through the holidays until January 15.

Dingell invited Ms. Garcia to be her guest at the 2018 State of the Union, and continues to work closely with the Garcia family to reunite them as quickly as possible.
