Gibraltar middle school reports case of viral meningitis
GIBRALTAR, Mich. (WJBK) - A Gibraltar school reported a case of viral meningitis Thursday.
Shumate Middle School sent out letters to parents today that a confirmed case of viral meningitis was reported. The student is being treated and has not been in school for a few days, said the letter, signed by Principal Els Ferguson.
Viral meningitis can be spread by direct contact with an infected person's oral or nasal secretions meaning saliva or mucous. Symptoms may include fever, headache, stiff neck, vomiting, rash, or confusion. It can be caused by several types of viruses.
The school advises that parents keep students up to date on vaccinations, eating well with sleep, staying home while sick and practicing good hygiene.
