Gun rights advocate: Oregon is why campuses need open carry

Thursday's mass shooting brings the gun control issue front and center yet again.

Some argue the answer to stopping these shootings is not limiting guns, but allowing more people to carry them in places where they are not allowed.

"At least that would have given the students the option to have a fighting chance," said Josh Wade. "In the face of an armed assailant, at least they should have the option of being able to have a fighting chance."

And that's what Wade, a gun rights advocate, is fighting for.  On Oct. 5 a judge will decide if his lawsuit against the University of Michigan and its ban on open carrying guns on campus can move forward.

"These policies, they don't do anything but create defenseless victims," Wade said.

While many would call his efforts unconscionable especially in light of the Oregon tragedy, Wade believes it’s the only viable solution to preventing violent crime on campus.

"Obviously this person was intent on doing harm," Wade said. "And no policy is going to prevent that. It's unfortunate and you know the police can't be everywhere. That's the truth, that's the harsh reality."

When the judge reviews the case Monday whatever the decision is, the party which loses will appeal.
