DETROIT (WJBK) - Bullets fly near a car wash on Detroit's west side after an argument gets out of control.
Now one man is in the hospital and another is on the run while a section of McNichols near Evergreen was closed off Wednesday afternoon. Police say a man was shot here at the corner, outside this car wash.
The victim was hit in the leg. Investigators didn't want to speak on camera but say this stemmed from neighborhood conflict between some guys over stolen property. Police say the victim is 26 years old and in temporary serious condition.
The suspect is a black man, 20 years old, light complexion and he was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black and gray shorts and armed with a handgun still at large.
"My cousin was shot," said Russell Donahue, the victim's cousin.
He wouldn't share his cousin's name, but Donahue spoke briefly about what he believes led up to the shooting.
"Some thieving stuff, some bullcrap," he said. "It was pointless. All of it was pointless."
"They were coming for his brother. He pulled up and they shot him."
Police at the scene say they've gotten different versions of what happened, and still trying to make sense of it all.
"They said some guy pulled up started shooting out the blue," said Scott Hall, the car wash manager. "I don't know if it's gang related or what."
What exactly happened, and what led up to shooting doesn't matter to residents who are calling it pointless.
"Young and hot, it gets hot out here like this and crime shoots up because everybody has an attitude and they don't think," said Jamal Goldman, a Detroit resident. "So now that guy is about to lose his life over a decision he made over a dollar. Senseless."
There is a security camera outside the car wash that may have recorded footage of the shooting that happened only a few feet away. If you have any information on who the suspect is, call Detroit police at (313) 596-5200.
