Gym owner arrested for bank robbery - but is he the right guy?

- Remember this bank robber?

On Wednesday night FOX 2 showed security camera images of the man who Grosse Pointe Woods police say robbed the Chemical Bank on Mack Avenue.

Police say he showed the teller a note stating "This is a robbery." The teller met his demands and handed over the cash. The suspect was described as a black man between 45 and 50 years old, approximately 6 feet tall and 220 pounds wearing a Monster Jam baseball cap.

Investigators put the word out and someone apparently answered, pointing the finger at a guy who helps run Detroit Thrive inside the Mack Athletic Complex.  SWAT teams swarmed the place Thursday afternoon and arrested the man they thought was responsible.

"They did, unbelievable," said co-worker Don Jaeger.

His coworker who helps run the adult and athlete physical training program says police have the wrong guy.

"I am not going to make any comments until everything comes out," said Jaeger. "I appreciate you guys coming by, and when it does come out it should be pretty interesting."

FOX 2 went to the suspect's former gym in St. Clair Shores and everyone we spoke to agrees that police nabbed the wrong man. In fact, they say the man in the bank image doesn't even look like their friend.

"That's definitely not him," said one man. "I saw him yesterday. That's definitely not him. Number one he is not that type of guy and number two, he is not even built like that."

At last check the man is still in custody, but it could be a case of mistaken identity. We will have more on this as the story develops Friday.
