Halloween in the D: City offers spooky events in Detroit

- Halloween is changing in Detroit. The city is no longer focusing on patrols on angel's night but instead returning Halloween to the children.

On Wednesday, officials announced the launch of Halloween in the D -- eight days of Halloween activities in Detroit starting on Oct. 24. And while there will still be sufficient patrols on Angel's Night, the city says fires and vandalism isn't a problem like it was in years past.

"A whole generation of children are growing up remembering Halloween is a time of patrols. And that's not the message that we want, so we feel like we made enough progress in the city that we can make Halloween about the children. We're really excited, this is a special time," said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

A lot of people came together to make this happen. Ford is the lead sponsor and the city says everyone can take part by donating wrapped candy to the police precincts where kids will get to go "trunk or treating" at police cars.

"It's nice to see the innovation and the new ways we that we're bringing families together. We're bringing together the people who help serve our communities and we're also, most importantly, bringing wonderful resources back to our children that absolutely need every bit of it," said community activitist Korey Batey.
