Hazardous apartment falling apart, surrounded by drug paraphernalia

- A vacant apartment building in Detroit is more than an eyesore, it's a hazard. it's surrounded by dirty needles, broken glass, and trash everywhere. On Wednesday, the FOX 2 Problem Solvers took the pleas of neighbors to the city.

The apartment in the 18700 block of Charleston is vacant and has been for quite some time. The bricks have fallen and are still falling, the roof is gone, and the kids are still running around the neighborhood.

Sherie Scott lives next door and says the building isn't just dangerous - it's terrifying.

"It's scary. I hear stuff at night. Creaking or maybe somebody down here rambling or something," Scott said.

The building has caught fire at least once. The glass from the windows were broken out long ago. In their place is vibrant artwork but that doesn't stop the terrible conditions that surround it.

"Broken pieces of a tub, and broke glass," Sherie's duaghter Ziona said.

"Mattresses, trash, burnt debris, grass," Sherie said.

Sherie and her daughter say they can only do so much. Neighbors are trying to clean up this area across the street but still feel unsafe with people going in and out of this rotted building daily.

"You never know what people are doing inside this building," Sherie said.

It's not just falling bricks and wood, there's also dirty diapers, drug paraphernalia, and downed power lines nearby.

"If our children can't come outside and be safe, where can they go?" Sherie said. "We can do better detroit. We can do better."

Ziona and her mother called FOX 2 for help and city officials said they will start by removing graffiti, securing the building and cleaning up the garbage. However, the building can't immediately be demolished since the city doesn't own it. It was recently foreclosed on and should be coming to the city soon for demolition.

Once that happens, Ziona has big plans.

"All of the kids can come out and we'll play," she said.
