Heroin, pot found in SUV that caused crash killing 2 motorcyclists

Charges were filed today against the driver who caused a fatal crash on I-94 in Allen Park on Nov. 7.

Police say she was under the influence at about 2:35 p.m. when she lost control of her car and killed motorcyclists Kevin "Maestro" Bowers and Marco "Polo" Rubin.

They were driving their Harley Davidsons on westbound I-94 near Oakwood when 31-year-old Chana Woods crossed the median hitting them head-on.   Rubin, 48, and Bowers, 49, were killed instantly. 

And Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says the fault of the accident lies with Woods, who was allegedly high on drugs.  The cops say that a search of Wood's car turned up marijuana and heroin. And she was driving on a suspended license.

"It's surreal, it doesn't seem real now," said Mona Lisa Andrew, girlfriend of Bowers and mother of his child. "He loved to bike so there was nothing we could do to stop him. But we asked him to be safe. It is disheartening that this wasn't his fault."

Woods has been charged with two counts each of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence causing death, and two counts each of driving with license suspended.

"He had a kind spirit," said Bowers' mother, Darrayln Bowers. "And I am sure God has more plans for him."

Like his mother, Kevin was into real estate and he was a commercial photographer.  He also graduated from the Detroit College of law but never practiced. 

But for Mrs. Bowers, she lost another son nine years ago.

"Two sons, I brought two young men into the world," she said. "Nine years ago my son Terrance died of leukemia.

And now questions from Kevan's 9-year-old daughter, Brooke, linger.

"'Why me mom, he was so young, why did he have to go,'" Andrew said. "(There's) nothing we can do."

She was arraigned and remanded to jail  on a $1 million cash/surety bond in 24th District Court in Allen Park.  Her probable cause hearing will be held 9 a.m. Nov. 23 at 9 a.m. Her preliminary examination will be held on 9:30 a.m. Nov. 30.

"I'm not that strong, my knees are wobbling," said Bowers. "I have nothing left to lose."

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Bowers' family incuding Darrayln's six grandchildren.
