Homeless man killed by hit-and-run driver near Macomb Mall

- Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver that killed a homeless man walking near Macomb Mall and sped off.

Investigators say around 10:30 p.m. Friday that 58-year-old Keith Powell attempted to cross a busy stretch of Gratiot Avenue near Voiland in Roseville.

"When the victim was struck he was walking with a woman and for whatever reason she left the scene before officers arrive. We would like to talk to her to see what she saw," Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said.

Police say they're also looking for the driver of the hit and run vehicle. Pieces of the damaged vehicle were left at the scene and that evidence helped police identify the make and model.

"A red Dodge Journey that we believe was involved in this crash and it was last seen fleeing southbound on Gratiot Avenue from the scene. It should have extensive front-end damage - driver's side of the vehicle," Berlin said.

As the investigation continues, police say the driver could face a number of charges, including voluntary manslaughter, which is a 15-year felony.

Investigators say the victim did not have any family living in Michigan and his loved ones are currently to en route to claim the body. Police hope the driver will think about these family members and do the right thing.

"Try to think if it were your loved one that was just struck and you callously drove away. How would you feel? Come on in, turn yourself in," Berlin said.
