Hours-long standoff on I-75 ends, suspect safely in custody

(WJBK) - After an hours-long standoff, an armed man who refused to come out of his car and cooperate with police on I-75 Thursday morning has been taken safely into custody.

I-75 had been closed for hours in Monroe County, between Luna Pier and South Otter Creek near the Ohio border. As of 12:15 p.m., both directions have been reopened.

MSP Trooper Tony Qevas from the Monroe Post says the Oakland County Sheriff's Office got a call around 4 a.m. about a man making suicidal threats. Authorities spotted the man in his car and tried to pull him over for a welfare check, but the man didn't stop.

Authorities pursued the driver and learned he was livestreaming to Facebook, making threats against police officers and himself. In the video, authorities also learned he had a firearm with him in the car.

The pursuit started in Oakland County and went through Wayne all the way down to Monroe, where authorities eventually stopped the car with stop sticks. The man was in his car, refusing to cooperate with police for hours. 

The standoff ended just after 11:30 a.m. Nobody was injured.
