Meanwhile some greedy crooks are facing charges for trying to profit off of Sgt. Ken Steil's death.

FOX 2 has more on how you can make sure your donations actually go to the family.

On Wednesday two men were arrested on Detroit's east side Wednesday accused of setting up a fake GoFundMe account for the late Detroit Police Sgt. Ken Steil and other crimes.

"That's crazy," said neighbor George Sutton. "It's real sad. If you're going to do a fake GoFundMe account for someone who passed (away), someone who is not your family, that's really bad."

The organization GoFundMe sent out a statement from spokesperson Bobby Whithorne, saying in part: "The campaign in question was created on Aug. 18, quickly flagged as fraudulent, and immediately placed on hold. The campaign received one donation, which has been refunded. No withdrawals were made from the campaign. We always cooperate with law enforcement investigations and will work directly with Detroit PD."

"This is a despicable act of selfishness and greed," said Cmdr. Elvin Barren.

The bogus account is what initially lead police to the Detroit house on Courville, where they found assault rifles and a grow house operation. Although Detroit police say they haven't found any proof, the brother of the two men arrested claims one of them is a nursing student and licensed care giver, and had been growing the marijuana legally.

Police say they are looking into whether the guns and the grow operation were legal. But we do know the bogus GoFundMe account was not authorized by police or Steil's family.

And at 11 a.m. on Friday, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office will have all officers in equipped cars park their vehicles in traffic, enable their lights and sirens for 15 seconds in memory of Sgt. Steil.
