ITT Tech shuts down all campuses after federal crackdown

Students who showed up at ITT Technical Institute for class Monday were instead told classes are canceled permanently.

"They hooked me up with a job through their career services. I thought everything was going smooth until today," Shane Miller said.

Miller was studying cyber security at ITT Tech, and now he's among hundreds of thousands of students nationwide as well as 8,000 employees wondering what happened.

"I have three months left. I've been doing this for two years, and we just got this thrown on us last minute," Rebekah Wellman said.

Wellman, a student studying nursing, has her books, her assignments, but now she has no school.

"Our credits don't seem to transfer anywhere so life's been on hold for two years and I have to start it all over again," she said.

Wellman was one of the students in the nursing program at ITT Technical Institute in Canton.

"My last email was homework for the third semester from one of my teachers," nursing student Jeremy Simpson said.

"We received our books, an email from our instructor, which chapters to go over expecting to go to school next Monday," said Jennifer Berlanga-Hava, who is also a nursing student.

But ITT released a statement Tuesday saying it will discontinue its academic operations at all of its campuses nationwide.

This comes after the U.S. Department of Education imposed sanctions on ITT Technical late last month alleging the for-profit school accepted billions of dollars in federal grants and loans but failed to provide adequate job training. The school was barred from accepting new students who use federal aid.

Now ITT Tech says it's being forced to close altogether.

"What do we do from here - where do we go next? Who's going to help us? Who's going to take our credits so we don't have to start all over?" Berlanga-Hava said.

These nursing students are hoping another school will step forward and accept their credits so they can get their degrees.

As for student loans, the Department of Education is telling current or recently enrolled ITT students they may be able to have their federal loan debt wiped away so they can start over.

"It's been an emotional roller coaster the last couple weeks and today it's just been a mess," Wellman said.
