Laurence Fishburne: "Batman v. Superman" movie has connection to Motor City

The entire Batman vs. Superman cast had fun hanging out in Detroit while shooting the film, but actor Laurence Fishburne found one special spot in the city famous for night life and jazz, and also believes that the characters in the film have a real connection to the Motor City.

FOX 2’s Lee Thomas sat down with Fishburne to talk about his work and the connections to Detroit.

"Batman and Superman -- they are products of a Midwestern America. They are not from New York or LA, they are from the middle of the country. ... So they have to be from Chicago or Detroit," he said.

Fishburne plays the head of the Daily Planet in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice," but the 54-year-old award-winning actor found a spot he loved while making a movie in Detroit.

"I will say that one of my favorite places in the world that I've ever been to is a place called Cliff Bells," he said. "I walked into that place and I was like, 'I need some of this in my life.' It's an amazing place."

According to Fishburne, to create a new beginning for this franchise of movies, filming in Detroit was all about returning to the origin of the story.

"Growing up reading the comic books, I always assumed -- because I come from New York -- that metropolis was Los Angeles," he said. "And that Gotham was New York, because people called New York 'Gotham' anyway. But in really ... looking into the history of the comic books and where the guys came from that created the characters, Gotham is Detroit and Metropolis is Chicago."

He said Superman goes to the city from Kansas and the closest big city is Chicago, adding they filmed in Chicago and Detroit.

Fishburne also plays Alex Haley in the film "Roots," which was a role he asked for.

"I was acting when the first one came out, but I didn't get a chance to audition for it. I was making this little movie called 'Apocalypse Now," he said.

The Batman vs. Superman movie, which features some FOX 2 staff, opens Friday in theaters nationwide.
