The situation inside the apartment early Saturday morning could have turned tragic if it wasn't for a smart 7-year-old girl who knew when it was time to call police. She dialed 911 after shots were fired inside the Pontiac home.

The first words out of the little girl's mouth to the 911 operator was "Can you send the police?" and it sounds like Oakland County Sheriff's Deputies got there just in time.

911 operator: "Ok, what's going on there?"

"He's like ... he shot through the floor and stuff," the girl said.

The babysitting boyfriend of the mother had fired a gun through the floor in front of the 7-year-old girl and two boys ages 1 and 2 years old that he was in charge of watching. The girl told Oakland County Sheriff's Deputies her baby brother asked if the gun in his babysitter's waist band was real. The suspect pulled the weapon out, racked it and fired it into the apartment floor.

Malique Reese thought he was coming home to a police raid on Cherry Hill Drive, saying he saw about eight police cars around the apartment. Malique's 5-year-old stepdaughter often played next door. He says not anymore.

"That is nowhere near protecting your kids," Reese said. "That's endangering them."

And that's exactly what the 22-year-old babysitter is accused of - child endangerment and reckless discharge of a weapon.

Investigators found the bullet fragments in the floor but no sign of the weapon. The suspect claimed he threw it in the sewer, but wouldn't say where.

Mom eventually came home early Saturday morning. Although Child Protective Services were called, her three kids remain in her custody. And thanks to her 7-year-old daughter, they were not injured, or worse.

"I think she had a big part helping out her brothers," Reese said. "She didn't want to see anything happen."

They believe the suspect lied about what he did with that gun. Investigators are still searching for it.

In the meantime, the 22-year-old sits behind bars awaiting charges.

Nobody was home when FOX 2 tried to get comment from the mother, but neighbors say it was not the first time the suspect had looked after her children while she was away.
