Local Muslim community creates Ramadan commercial

- The local Muslim community banded together to create a commercial to spread awareness about Ramadan.

The group produced a 2015 commercial filmed in Dearborn that aired in Michigan, Florida and New York, and are currently producing a 2016 version. This year's commercial is set to air in six different states, including Michigan, with a goal to bump the number up to all 50 states.

Local Muslims not only want to share more about their 30 days of prayer, fasting and charity, but also be rid of the problems plaguing their community. The creators said their goal is to show that people from all walks of life can sit in the same home and break bread regardless of religion.

"What I see in this commercial is something where it's amazing to me when I can look at any human being as a human, and that's the strongest aspect of this commercial," said Wissam Bazzi, a member of the 2016 Ramadan campaign team.

This year's campaign launch party will be held at the Dearborn Atrium.

"As a mother, I just feel like the Ramadan campaign is going to help my children be proud of being Muslim and not be afraid of it," said former Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit), who participated in the project. "Right now, so many of our young people are afraid of being Muslim publicly."

Financial contributions to the project were made from Jewish and Christian communities to help spread the word.
