Macomb County Habitat volunteers hit the roof for vets

This September 11th, the Macomb County Habitat for Humanity has come up with a unique way to help local veterans: they're up on a roof to pay for new roofs for veterans.

Roughly 30 volunteers have vowed to stay on top of the Habitat for Humanity roof until they raise $100,000 for veterans. As Helen Hicks, the president & CEO of Macomb Habitat for Humanity, explains, this is a unique fundraiser.

"We've never done this before," Hicks said. "We're coming to the end of our season, and we need to raise some money. So we thought what better way than to be out here, in the community, and reaching out, so donations come our way."

Board member Neisha Roupe told FOX 2's Hannah Saunders that for the most part people are encouraging, either by honking their horns or yelling out words of encouragement.

Dozens of drivers have stopped in to check out the spectacle - and pitch in a few bucks. Some, like Zach Dunning, are doing so on behalf of their businesses.

"We are donating $500 today to Habitat for Humanity to help with the local projects, wherever they see fit, we are more than happy to help them out," Dunning said.

The $100,000 will pay for new roofs, and home repairs for four Macomb County vets in need. They're doing the rooftop stays in shifts: every few hours, three new people will rotate in, until their goal is met.
